Prosecco and Limoncello Cocktail Recipe

A Brief Limoncello Story There is another popular drink that hails from Italy, one that you may be less familiar with, called Limoncello. Legend says that Limoncello was first invented in Capri in the early 1900s by a woman named Lady Maria Antonia Farace. Capri has the ideal climate for growing citrus fruit, so she grew her own, both for eating and making homemade liqueur to serve guests who visited. The story goes on to say that her signature citrus liqueur gained traction when her grandson opened a bar after World War II, and served his family’s recipe to patrons. What is a Limoncello? This Italian liquor requires a lot of tender love and care to make. It’s almost like an alcoholic lemonade, made with lemon zest, sugar, water and alcohol, typically a grappa or vodka. The lemons used for it are not just your everyday lemons found in the grocery store. True limoncello is made using the zest of lemons from its original home, Capri, but can also be made with lemons from the Amalfi Coast and Sorrento. The harvest takes place between February and October, and the harvesting is done by hand so there is no risk of the lemons falling and touching the ground. Limoncello is a citrus explosion, full of bright flavor and color, and is typically served either before or after a meal, as an aperitif or a digestif. It’s chilled, but never served over ice, and since it is quite strong, it’s served in a shot glass or small cup.
