As demand for organic, biodynamic ‘natural’ wines and green project continues to grow across the US, end consumer often ask what these terms actually mean. Here’s our quick overview about these very special wine categories...

Organic Wine

Think of organic wine like organic fruit and vegetables. What is already controversial in our opinion, why I need the word Organic when something is already natural produced? Ask your self…….. something doesn’t make sense. But to explain the Organic wines are produced with organically grown grapes, which are grown in carefully managed vineyards without the intervention of pesticides or other chemicals. But only the grapes and some certain additives, such as yeast or egg whites, are permitted. Unfortunately there is disagreement within the wine community about the use of sulfites in organic wine. Every country has different rules regarding the organic production. For examples in the USA, organic wine must have no added sulfites. But in Europe and Canada the addition of sulfites does not compromise a wine’s organic status. So for our understanding the organic sign is tricky to understand and not of our recommendation.

Biodynamic Wine

We recommend Biodynamic wine much more because it is a holistic view of agriculture which relies on balancing vine, mother nature and earth. It is not just a lack of pesticides, but looks at the moon’s cycles and special preparations for the soil what is so important. The grape root comes from the soil and that is why the treatment of the soil is essential to be protected in the best way in mother unison. It might sound a little strange, but this centuries-old practice is all about honoring the terroir, listening to the environment, and ensuring human intervention (pruning, watering and harvesting) are ‘in tune’ with the earth’s natural rhythms. So important special in this critical days. The Wine not start by the grapes, It starts with the soil. The result, the wine is more balanced which is more expressive of the terroir where the grapes were grown. Maybe you can’t taste the difference right away, but you will feel the difference next day, because your body will have no nasty side effects for sure

Natural Wine

Between natural wine and organic wine is a huge difference. The grapes are farmed organically or bio-dynamically. But in the winery, there is minimal intervention, means very often the grape will be not pressed, no filtration or fining, no additions of yeast to help speed along fermentation or sulphur to help stabilize and kill bacteria. Grapes are left alone to do their thing and the result is an incredibly natural product, but to often the wine quality will variate and there same wine will have a different palate, a lot of bottles will have a different variation. The flavor profile is quite distinct too and Natural wine is not for everyone specially for the size of the US market it will be to difficult to maintain the quantity of bottles what you need to succeed.

Green Project

The Italian Green Project is a set of actions, behaviors and procedures which put forward to contribute to the environmental sustainability of their business, respecting the existing territorial balance. It is only a segment of a broader concept.

"Social liability" has always guided this wine producer who are allowed to use the certification of the Green Project, shaping their line of work: with maximum respect for the communities in which the winery operates.

Green Project is simply an awareness of time honored production , without ideologies or extremisms, animated by the desire to improve. Common sense and social responsibility in the various processes: simply expose oneself to the genuineness of the correct agronomic and cellar practices, self-certifying one’s own doing,in order to guarantee quality, contributing to environmental sustainability while respecting existing territorial balances.

Green Project is a set of actions, behaviors and procedures to forward and contribute to the environmental sustainability of the wine production by respecting the existing territorial balances. It is only a segment of a broader concept of social responsibility. This guidance defining its own line of direction: with maximum respect for the communities, in which the winery operates , of suppliers, of consumers, of customers, of the territory, and of the local cultural heritage. It is much more than just protecting a grape.

The Green Project includes not to use herbicides and chemical fertilizers. To eliminate as much as possible the use of chemical substances and to integrated control technique, to introduced alternative practices in vineyards such as grassing for the protection of beneficial insects, to guarantee the life of the micro fauna and to create a refuge for hares and squirrels. Also practice the method of “sexual confusion“. The latter is a biological method to combat harmful insects by limiting reproduction through the use of pheromones: “reproductive perfumes” that prevent the male moth from finding and fertilizing the female.

Moreover, the meticulous and constant care of the vine guarantees excellent ventilation and phytosanitary protection for the grape clusters, as well as the monitoring of the climatic parameters (precipitation, temperature, humidity, etc.) through the installation of meteorological sheds. Sustainability and excellence of the grapes are also pursued by implementing only mechanical processing on the row, using only organic fertilizers with the agronomic technique of green manure on alternating row with traditional grassing.

The desire for a quality that grows over time finds an important ally in biodiversity.

Clean Energy, reduction of Consumption and solid waste is an important contribution is given by the production of clean energy from renewable sources with the installation of a photovoltaic system on the surface of the corporate roof that allows a reduction of CO2 emissions as well as the correct maintenance of the systems, thermal insulation of the wine vessels and the use of waste water treatment plant that allows reducing the environmental impact and achieving energy savings. Even the use of light bottles has made it possible to save both on the emissions deriving from the production of glass and from those generated by transport, as well as the use of 100% technical closures in recyclable cork and 100% recycled paperboard boxes.

Limit the use of water only to operations where it is necessary; furthermore, the vineyards do not need irrigation, even in the drier years.

The large production of biomass, mainly resulting from the pruning of the vineyards, is partly initiated for processing.

Great attention is paid to the management of separate waste collection for the recycling of materials.

All employees are required to engage in consistent behavior under GREEN PROJECT in all the activities related to their duties, providing staff training on environmental, safety and security measures.Energy saving and the reduction of waste, by-products and waste is at the centre of attention of all those involved.

Green Project is a step above all other method’s what we are describing in his blog this should initiative by all of us and we would have a better planet. This tool can be collective and personal gratification for us all and protecting the future nature. We all need to have environmental consciousness simply to help stem the damage to the ecosystem and it is clear that it should be addressed on a territorial scale. In order to reduce the environmental impact,

Focused Viticulture in the vineyards there are large differences in the vegetative behavior of the vines depending from area to area and thus the grapes are the direct expressions of these differences with different characteristics, even in the same plot. In this context it becomes essential to develop techniques and methods, permitting in particular the development and vegetative production of vines and their variation in years. The study of the vine areas takes an indisputable importance when you intend to produce quality wines which are “unique” as they express their identity by characteristics of soil and soul of the vine.

Monitoring with infrared sensors provides deep knowledge about the diversities in the vineyard and enables optimal management of viticulture and wine making operations. It is an integrated project, which embodies the idea of combining technological innovation and technical / scientific expertise in the wine industry, to enhance the concept of identity of the vine-wine pairing, therefore, to get to the vinification techniques aimed at maximizing the features of enological identities.

How you can read, the Green Project is the future not only for a clean wine, also protect mother nature and the future generations.
