Is Prosecco Low Carb?

Mar 4, 2026by SYLTBAR Team

When you hear the word carbohydrates, you probably automatically think of bread, potatoes, pasta, crackers, chips, pretzels, etc. We have all been trained to consider these types of food as the primary source of carbohydrates. We often forget that carbohydrates are also found in fruits and vegetables, some dairy products, and beverages, including alcohol.

Beer has a high amount of carbohydrates because it’s made with hops, barley or wheat. All of these products are forms of carbohydrates. But did you know that wine can have carbohydrates?

According to popular wine website, Wine Folly, a standard 5 ounce glass of still wine can have anywhere from 0-4 grams of net carbs, depending on its amount of residual sugars. However, the site’s charts show sparkling wines can be a bit higher. This could be because many mass-produced sparkling wines have a lot of sugar or sweeteners added to them. Higher sugar content means higher carbohydrate content.

Sugar and Carbohydrates

One thing to remember is that all wine, even low-calorie sparkling wine, naturally contains sugar. Even the wellness-focused wine brands like us at SYLTBAR still have sugar.

Natural sugars are left over from grapes after fermentation; this is called residual sugar. The longer the fermentation process, the less residual sugar will be left. SYLTBAR wines go through a double fermentation process that can take up to four months. This allows the grapes to fully mature and develop, leaving very little residual sugar behind. Our producers never add any sugar or sweeteners after that; our no-additive Prosecco and wines are left pure, exactly how they should be. This is why SYLTBAR products are naturally very low in sugar.

However, other brands skip the long fermentation process to save time and money. Instead, they add sugar after the production process to enhance the wine’s palatability.

But regardless of what kind of sugar it is, it’s still a carbohydrate, and wines that add more sugar on top of the already naturally occurring sugar will automatically have more carbs. If you want a low‑sugar sparkling wine, SYLTBAR is the best choice when it comes to both Prosecco and champagne.

Our Premium Brut Prosecco and Sparkling Rosé were both tested in an independent study by the University of Miami Diabetes Research Institute. The glucose levels were compared to 80 other well-known sparkling wine brands. SYLTBAR was found to have a significantly lower amount than the others. It is the perfect mindful drinking Champagne alternative we know you have been looking for.

Low Calorie, Low Carb Prosecco

Because of the low amount of sugar, Mr SYLTBAR Premium Prosecco is also a natural low-calorie Prosecco, with just 49 calories per 6 ounce glass. Mrs Sparkling Rosé is not far behind, with 63 calories per 6 ounce glass. Both have less than half a gram of sugar per serving as well — Mr with 0.3 grams and Mrs with 0.45 grams.

Although dry sparkling wines, such as Prosecco, Champagne and Cava, are typically not very high in carbs — usually around two grams per five-ounce serving — SYLTBAR Prosecco carbs are still much lower.

Comparing the calorie count is just as impressive. A six-ounce glass of other well known Proseccos is around 100 calories, and for Champagne, around 140 calories. It should be noted that Champagne is always going to be higher in calories because it contains more alcohol compared to Prosecco. Champagne is generally around 12-12.5%, while most Proseccos are 11%. Mr, however, contains 11.5% ABV, which is slightly higher than what you normally see on the market, and that is due to the longer fermentation time.

Generally Mass Produced Wine = Lots of Carbs

Remember this when you are shopping for wine. If clean-ingredient sparkling wine is the goal, look closely at the wine producer. Mass-produced sparkling wines are likely to have added sugar, making their carbohydrate content higher.

For the most part, the Proseccos found in the U.S. are mostly mass-produced, with no true winery behind the production. Instead, they are produced in big facilities, hiding behind boutique labels.
